Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8841 GBP   £1 GBP = 1.1310 €UR
1 €UR = $ 1.1126 USD   $1 USD = 0.8975 €UR
1 €UR = $ 1.7049 AUD   $1 AUD = 0.5865 €UR

Based on National Bank of Greece exchange rates.
Other banks likely to offer rates which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g. the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Greece Blasts British Museum for Parthenon Marbles Fashion Show

Greece’s Culture Minister Lina Mendoni said Saturday that the fashion show at the British Museum featuring the Parthenon Marbles “degrades the sculptures and the universal values they represent.”

Earlier in the day designer Erdem Moralıoğlu staged his latest London Fashion Week catwalk show in front of the Parthenon Marbles. The setting was a statement that underscored the inspiration for Erdem’s autumn fashion collection; the elegant wardrobe of Greek soprano Maria Callas.

Thousands of island plots in waiting

Almost 17,700 undeveloped properties outside zoning areas have been sold in the last five years in the islands of the South Aegean and Ionian Sea alone, and of these, more than a third are in the Cyclades chain.

These figures clearly illustrate the impact on the environment that the relative liberalization of construction outside zoning areas initiated by the Environment Ministry could have on the islands, if it is finally implemented.

Minister unveils plan for paid afternoon surgeries

Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis unveiled a plan on Monday for the introduction of paid afternoon surgeries within Greece’s National Health System (ESY), emphasizing that a decision to initiate their operation is imminent.

Addressing concerns, Georgiadis clarified that the plan does not involve the privatization of the system. “We are not privatizing ESY. It would be foolish to suggest that we do not need it. Our objective is to strengthen the ESY and uphold its public character,” he said.

'Brutal' donkey skin trade banned by the African Union

Animal welfare charities have welcomed an Africa-wide ban on the controversial donkey skin trade.

It will make it illegal to slaughter donkeys for their skin in 55 countries across the continent.

Demand for the animals' skins is fuelled by the popularity of an ancient Chinese medicine called Ejiao, traditionally made from donkey hides.

African state leaders approved the ban at the conclusion of the African Union summit in Ethiopia on Sunday.

The charity, the Donkey Sanctuary, called the the trade "brutal and unsustainable" and said it had decimated donkey populations around the world, particularly in Africa and South America.

Labour vows to ‘eliminate’ fox hunting

Labour has vowed to eliminate fox hunting within its first five years in power, saying there is not a majority in “any part of the country” that wants to see it continue.

Steve Reed, the shadow environment secretary, said the party would close “loopholes” in the existing ban that allow some types of hunting to go on, claiming it would prevent hounds killing pets and livestock.

Labour has already vowed to toughen the Hunting Act, including banning trail hunting – where dogs follow a pre-laid scent rather than a wild animal.

It has been urged to abandon the plans by country campaigners, who warned the party to end its “running attack on rural communities”.[/b]

New controls on holiday lets to be introduced

New controls on holiday lets in England will be introduced from the summer to stop local people being unable to afford to live in their own community, the government has announced.

The changes mean people may need to seek permission from the council to turn their home into a short-term let.

A mandatory national registration scheme will also be introduced.

The rules will not apply to people renting out their main home for less than 90 nights a year.

Hotels, hostels and B&Bs are also unaffected by the changes.

The right to roam … but you have to trespass to get there. England’s countryside rules are truly absurd
It is a scandal that 2,500 beauty spots are designated as places to walk and enjoy, but no one can legally reach them except the landowners

The revelation that 2,500 areas of English countryside that supposedly enjoy a “right to roam” can be reached only by trespassing over private land is absurd. It means that some 2,700 hectares of open land effectively require a helicopter for their legal access.

Last summer, Labour pledged to bring the Scottish practice to England. Then in October, Keir Starmer added this to his list of U-turns. Indeed, in his party conference speech, he outspokenly promised to weaken planning control and liberate building on the green belt. He wanted “yes in my back yard” and farmers free to erect on-shore wind turbines and solar arrays. This spells landscape disaster.

Windows 11's final "Moment Update" has these new features

The final Moment Update introduces compliance with the European Union's Digital Markets Act. It gives users from the EU control over certain features, including the ability to uninstall Microsoft Edge, turn off Bing in Windows Search, and disable news in Widgets.

Moment Update 5 will be the last update of its kind. Microsoft is switching again to yearly feature update releases. The next one, Windows 11 version 24H2, will be released in the second half of 2024.
https://www.ghacks.net/2024/02/19/windows-11s-final-moment-update-has-these-new-features/

Windows 11 version 24H2 is what could've been Windows 12, that's now postponed, allegedly awaiting more AI. Windows 11 hasn't been a runaway success, said to be due to the fact that many recent PCs running Windows 10 can't run Windows 11.

A Dismal Harvest Concludes in Greece

Final estimates for the weather-afflicted ‘off-year’ harvest in Greece suggest the country’s olive oil yield will fall below the initially projected 200,000 tons, reaching somewhere between 150,000 and 170,000 tons of olive oil.

Production data released by the European Commission also indicate a poor olive oil crop of 175,000 tons, the lowest in the last six years and a stark contrast from last year’s bumper harvest of around 340,000 tons.
