Firefighters called to zoo to free rhino trapped in tyre

Firefighters have used cutting gear to free a rhino stuck in a tyre for more than an hour.

Keepers at Edinburgh Zoo called out the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service as their “last hope” after failing to free the juvenile male rhino, which had its head and leg through the tyre.

Firefighters from Sighthill attended at around 5.45pm on Sunday and used specialised cutting equipment to free the stricken animal.

Amazon Partfinder checks PC component compatibility

One of the things that PC users have to make sure when they shop for new hardware for their devices is that the new hardware components are compatible with the device.

It is quite difficult for people who are not very tech-savvy to determine if a component, e.g. a video card, memory, or processor, is compatible with a PC.

Information is found in a variety of places, e.g. the motherboard manual or the manufacturer's website.

Amazon launched an option on its website recently that customers may use to find out if a PC component is compatible with their device or another component.

Could be useful if you're building your own PC or need a replacement part (does anyone use a desktop these days??), as is https://pcpartpicker.com/list/

Denmark to banish foreign criminals to remote island

The tough scheme was set up as part of an agreement between Denmark’s conservative coalition government and its anti-immigration ally, the Danish People’s Party (DF).

The DF's official Twitter account celebrated the announcement by publishing an animated cartoon which shows a dark-skinned man being dumped by a ship on a desert island... opposition figures have strongly criticised the proposals, which one politician described as a "humanitarian collapse."

Longer report in thelocal.dk where it points out there's a ferry service to/from the island but those sent there will have to spend their nights there.

Government gives 16 grammar schools in England a share of £50m funding pot to expand
Critics denounce scheme that will benefit just 4,000 pupils

The identities of the grammar schools which will share £50m funding to create just 4,000 additional places for pupils, have been unveiled by the government.

Campaigners have criticised the allocation of the taxpayers' money which comes during a funding crisis in state schools.

Almost half of the grammar schools chosen to receive the funding are located in the Home Counties and only one school that will benefit from the Selective School Expansion Fund is in the north of England.

Three in four of the selective schools selected by the government are in the constituencies of Conservative MPs.

It will cost £12,500 to fund each new grammar school place under the expansion scheme, the figures suggest, which is more than double the amount that state secondary schools are given per pupil. The amount spent on each secondary school child in England was £6,200 in 2017-18.
