Greece passes pension deal in defiance of bailout creditors

The Greek parliament has defied the international creditors providing Athens' bailout funds and voted through a one-off payment to pensioners.

Plans for the €617m (£517m; $656m) pre-Christmas handout were opposed by European bodies negotiating Greece's financial lifeline.

A deal agreed earlier this month to provide the next tranche of debt relief for Athens is now on hold.

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said Greece would not be blackmailed.

Marinas protest mooring tax plans

The imposition of a mooring tax on yachts that dock in the country’s marinas would have a devastating impact on maritime tourism in Greece, according to Stavros Katsikadis, president of the Greek Marinas Association (GMA).

Katsikadis has been in contact with officials from the ministries of Tourism and Shipping, informing them of the seriousness of the matter. He stressed that if the government does impose such a tax, foreign-owned vessels will be less likely to come to Greece and owners of yachts already here will probably start looking at marinas elsewhere.

Hospitals ordered to stop vast majority of operations in crisis move

Hospitals have been ordered to stop carrying out the vast majority of operations in a desperate bid to attempt to fend off a growing NHS crisis.

Health regulators have stepped in to order the extreme measures amid rising panic about how services will cope with mounting strain.

In an average month, the health service carries out about 600,000 planned operations, as well as urgent procedures.

Now hospitals have been told to stop carrying out most planned surgery, to focus on treating emergency cases.
