Hugh Grant, politics and a murdered dog in Jeremy Thorpe drama

The makers of A Very English Scandal, a BBC drama about shamed politician Jeremy Thorpe, explain why his story is still relevant.

A gay affair, a bungled plot and a dead dog on Exmoor were the ingredients of what came to be dubbed "the trial of the century".

At its centre was Jeremy Thorpe - leader of the Liberal Party, a pillar of the establishment and the first British politician to be tried for conspiracy and incitement to murder.

Now, almost 40 years on from Thorpe's sensational acquittal, the story behind the case is being retold in a three-part BBC drama.

A Very English Scandal begins on BBC One on 20 May at 21:00 BST.

Tommy Charlton is following in the footsteps of brothers Sir Bobby and Jack by playing for England, at the age of 72.

His famous siblings were in the World Cup winning team in 1966.

Grandfather-of-six, Tommy, is to play for his country in the first ever international walking football match on Sunday at Brighton's Amex Stadium.

He secured his place in the over-60s squad after a trial at Solihull Football Centre, in the West Midlands.

Horrific Murder Stuns Greece

Police are investigating the gruesome murder of a 64-year-old woman by one of her sons in her apartment in Nea Smyrni, Athens.

The body was discovered on Thursday evening after police were alerted by neighbors complaining of a foul smell emanating from the apartment.

They discovered the body of the woman placed on a chair and her 38-year-old son sitting next to it.
