Greece: UN expert to assess impact of financial crisis and structural adjustment

GENEVA (26 November 2015) – United Nations Independent Expert on foreign debt Juan Pablo Bohoslavsky will undertake his first official visit to Greece from 30 November to 8 December 2015 to assess the impact of the financial crisis and economic adjustment programmes on the enjoyment of human rights, in particular economic, social and cultural rights.

“Greece has been required to undertake severe cut-backs in public spending and implement a list of economic and social reforms in order to receive further credit,” he noted. “I will assess what impacts these cut-backs and reforms have had on the right to health care, housing, education, and social security.”

One issue of particular concern is the growth of poverty and inequality within the country as a consequence of the financial and economic crisis. In that regard, the expert will pay special attention to the policies and strategies adopted by government and its international lenders to fight these trends under the third bail-out programme.

“I would like to learn, in particular, which measures have been adopted by Greece and its international lenders to protect individuals and groups in situation of vulnerability, such as refugees, migrants, minorities, highly indebted persons, persons with disabilities, children, the elderly and women,” he said.

Bus crashes in Trikala, driver nowhere to be seen

One of four driverless buses that started operating in the central city of Trikala in September veered off the road Thursday and crashed into a street kiosk.

It remained unclear what provoked the accident, which caused minor damage and no injuries.

Rome bans Centurions from tourist sites

Impersonators of soldiers from ancient Rome have been a common sight at the Colosseum, Forum and other major sites, posing for photos in return for cash.

But from Thursday, the Centurions are outlaws - along with bicycle-drawn rickshaw drivers and ticket touts.

There have been incidents of "gladiators" attacking each other to defend their pitches at lucrative sites.

Argostoli police yesterday arrested a 35 y-o shopkeeper for illegal possession of a firearm after he displayed a gun in his shop window. Looks like it could be a relic from WWII?

Hello Barbie brings smiles to kids, nightmares to privacy advocates

Privacy advocates are concerned that attackers can hack the new Hello Barbie doll and gain access to our children's most intimate thoughts.

According to a report by NBC Chicago, Hello Barbie is the first Barbie doll equipped with artificial intelligence (AI). When its belt buckle is pressed, the doll listens to what is being said and stores it in the cloud. The doll then uses those utterances, which can be accessed later via smartphone, to communicate with whomever is interacting with it.

And then there's the fact that Hello Barbie can be hacked.

Maybe there could be more fights promoted.  Visitors to the Colosseum could follow more Roman customs giving thumbs up or thumbs down - the winner getting the dosh and the loser giving free pics!!
