Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8927 GBP   £1 GBP = 1.1201 €UR
1 €UR = $ 1.1280 USD   $1 USD = 0.8865 €UR
1 €UR = $ 1.7072 AUD   $1 AUD = 0.5857 €UR
1 €UR = R21.4291 ZAR   R1 ZAR = 0.0466 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Greek ferry Hellenic Spirit hits another ferry and a tanker during arrival in Patra

Greek ferry Hellenic Spirit struck the ro/ro ferry Superfast II and the product tanker Aegean Tiffany during its arrival at the port city of Patra on Saturday.

The accident was attributed to heavy weather that hit Greece and the Aegean over the weekend disrupted shipping, forcing many ships to change their schedules or divert, and at least one major casualty – the sinking of the cargo ship Raptor off the Greek island of Lesvos on the weekend.

According to Maritime Executive news Greek maritime authorities are beginning to investigate the circumstances surrounding the loss of the freighter Raptor, which went down Sunday off Lesvos.

The Raptor sank shortly after making a distress call.

Only one crew member, the chief engineer, was rescued from the water. He told Greek authorities that the vessel had been in distress for a day before the call was made, and the crew had been attempting to bail out flooding.

The Greek Coast Guard suspects that the Raptor may have been involved in smuggling or another form of illicit activity. A previous inspection uncovered serious material deficiencies aboard the ship, but also revealed that the vessel had a history of meeting up with other ships under way – an unusual behavior for a bulker.

Ferry crossings being cancelled today due to the weather, best advice is to check ahead if you were planning to get across to the mainland today.

Rural communities of isolated elders growing

Greece has one of the highest percentages of elderly residents in rural and remote areas in the EU, experiencing insurmountable difficulties, according to a study by the Care Policy and Evaluation Center of the London School of Economics by Maria Karagiannidou, Raphael Wittenberg and Dr Jacqueline Daman in collaboration with Thalia Rizou.

Highlighting the difficulties, Karagiannidou bemoaned “the complete lack in Greece of data on older people and their needs.”

According to UN data, Greece’s population is aging faster than almost any European country and some municipalities in the country are predominantly populated by older people. Greece was sixth in the world with a population over 60 in 2015.

The CPEC study noted that populations in rural areas have reduced access to services and activities, and older residents of remote areas faced the risk of social exclusion, loneliness, reduced mobility and lack of access to service care.

Greece Had 24,000 New Companies in 2022

Over 120,000 new businesses have started in the last five years, with 24,000 of them opening in 2022 alone, Development Minister Kostas Skrekas said at a business event in Athens on Monday.

Addressing the Athens Chamber of Tradesmen during the awards for “Sustainable, Innovative, and Responsible Entrepreneurship”, Skrekas said the numbers mean “we could do better in the coming years.”

The government is focused on helping entrepreneurship so that Greece can continue raising its development rate for many years and the country approach European rates.

UK accuses Greece of breaking Parthenon promise on PM’s visit

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak cancelled Tuesday’s meeting with his Greek counterpart, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, after his office said the two sides had previously agreed that it should not be used as a public platform “to relitigate long, long settled matters.”

A Greek government official speaking on condition of anonymity said that there was no such agreement. Earlier a Greek government spokesman called the cancellation unprecedented and disrespectful.

Danish Museum Refuses to Return Stolen Ancient Parthenon Marble Pieces

ATHENS – With Greece and Britain in a row over the stolen Parthenon Marbles in the British Museum, the National Museum of Denmark said it will not return three fragments it has kept there for centuries, claiming them as part of Danish history.

The sculptural pieces are on display in the permanent collection in Denmark, consisting of two marble heads and a horse’s hoof that were obtained between 1688-1835, and the museum said they won’t be returned to Greece.

The National Museum’s Head of Research, Christian Sune Pedersen, added that the three fragments on display in Copenhagen are of “great importance for Danish cultural history and for understanding our interaction with the world around us at a time when democracy was taking shape.”

He didn’t explain how Greek-made ancient treasures have anything to do with Denmark’s role in history in the world, the pieces kept there also essentially stolen after being blown off the Parthenon in a bombing by the Venetians.

The Danes call the pieces they hold and display The Copenhagen Marbles, which are part of the Parthenon as much as those taken by Elgin, who sold them to the British Museum when he got into financial troubles.

12-Year Study Reveals How The Mediterranean Diet Might Affect Your Brain

Cognitive decline is less likely in those who follow a Mediterranean diet, according to a French study of 840 people aged 65 and over.

Dementia, such as Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative conditions, often starts with cognitive decline, which is a slow loss of mental abilities.

Research suggests that eating habits, especially the Mediterranean diet, may help protect against this loss.

Man finds out ‘blisters from shoes’ are wolf spider eggs laid in his toe on cruise holiday

Colin Blake’s wife was not overly concerned when she saw her husband’s big toe red and swollen during their 35th wedding anniversary cruise.

After all, most holidaymakers suffer the sting of blisters from new sandals rubbing at the feet after a day of exploring.

So the unsuspecting couple were left horrified when their on-board doctor told them a Peruvian wolf spider had bitten Mr Blake and laid eggs inside his toe.

Spider’s eggs then poured out of Mr Blake’s toe as the doctor cut it open.

Mr Blake, who lives in Cramlington, Northumberland, believes he was bitten when he was eating dinner outdoors in Marseille.

But an arachnologist said wolf spiders are not capable of laying their eggs inside humans.

Dr Sara Goodacre from the University of Nottingham told the BBC: “I can’t possibly see how it could be true at all because I know about their biology."
