Stolen Libyan Banknotes Resurface In Greece
Officials in Greece have intercepted banknotes that were stolen from the Central Bank of Libya in Benghazi in 2017. The discovery occurred in Larissa, central Greece, where a man attempted to exchange €40,000 at a branch of the Bank of Greece. The worn and torn banknotes raised suspicions, prompting authorities to seize them.
Investigation revealed that these banknotes bore striking similarities to those stolen from Benghazi, which amounted to approximately €159 million. In late 2017, a Libyan National Army brigade had seized the Central Bank and reportedly emptied its safes. https://greekcitytimes.com/2024/05/15/stolen-libyan-banknotes-resurface-in-greece/

Greece Boosts Beach Safety with €15M Lifeguard Outlay
Despite budget allocations, municipalities often struggle to attract qualified individuals to fulfill lifeguard roles, posing potential gaps in beach safety.
Just before the summer season kicks off, the Ministry of Interior has earmarked a substantial sum of 15 million euros to subsidize municipalities nationwide for lifeguard services on both organized and unorganized beaches.
Under the directive of Deputy Minister Theodoros Livanios, the subsidy for 129 municipalities has been approved, a significant increase of 5 million euros compared to the previous year. https://www.tovima.com/society/greece-boosts-beach-safety-with-e15m-lifeguard-outlay/

Seven Out Of 10 Europeans Believe Their Countries Accept Too Many Immigrants
More than 60% say the EU should strengthen its support for Ukraine and favor a ceasefire with Moscow, according to a survey in all 27 member states.
Europeans view immigration with increasing suspicion. Seven out of 10 Europeans believe that their country takes in too many migrants, according to a survey carried out by BVA Xsight for ARTE Europe Weekly, a project led by the French-German TV channel ARTE GEIE and which EL PAÍS has participated in, as part of the countdown to the European elections in June.
The survey shows that 85% of respondents feel the European Union needs to take more action to combat irregular migration. And only 39% believe that Europe needs immigration today.
Greece is the country where the most people (90%) believe their country takes in too many migrants.
These are some of the conclusions from a survey carried out online between March 27 and April 9 in the 27 member states, where 22,726 people over 15 years of age were interviewed, with a representative sample from each country. In addition to El PAÍS, the media organizations Gazeta Wyborcza, Internazionale, Ir, Kathimerini, Le Soir and Telex collaborated in the survey. https://english.elpais.com/international/2024-05-07/seven-out-of-10-europeans-believe-their-country-takes-in-too-many-immigrants.html
