Kef fire risk 22/08/23: Very high

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £0.8804 GBP
1 €UR = $1.1235 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1358 €UR
$1 USD = 0.8901 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Kef Port Authority officers yesterday evening arrested a 60 y-o male for violating the law regarding flares and fireworks. Appears he was chucking them around in the port area. Probably not a great idea.

Ithaki coast guard earlier today performed an emergency transfer from Piso Aetos to Sami for a 65 y-o local in need of urgent medical attention

Patients evacuated onto ferry as wildfire rages near hospital in Greece

Dozens of hospital patients, including newborn babies, were evacuated onto a ferry in the Greek port city of Alexandroupolis on Tuesday as a wildfire raged uncontrolled for a fourth day, and two new blazes broke out near Athens, the fire brigade said.

Hundreds of firefighters have been struggling to contain the blaze that broke out near Alexandroupolis on Saturday and quickly spread, fanned by gale force winds, sending plumes of smoke above the city and turning the night sky red. One person has been killed.

On the foothills of Mount Parnitha on the outskirts of Athens, a wildfire that broke out on Tuesday was threatening homes and an operation was underway to evacuate nuns from Kleiston Monastery, the fire brigade said.

Another blaze burned uncontrolled in the industrial town of Aspropyrgos. More than 120 firefighters and nine aircraft were fighting the blazes near Athens, the fire brigade said.

New ID Cards in Greece Fuel Conspiracy Theories

The new ID cards in Greece, expected to be issued in September, have fueled conspiracy theories on social media with many people believing that they will have a chip that will locate the owner at any time.

Despite assurances by the government that the new IDs will not have a geolocation system, skeptics see the magnetic strip on the new cards as a fresh attempt by the authorities to control them through technology.

Heard a new theory last night: the fires across Greece aren't being started by foreign agents, property developers, shepherds, yia-yias boiling the pot dry or grandad accidentally setting the olive grove alight with his welding torch. It's the government. They want to build wind turbines on the burnt land. Hey ho.

Greece wildfires: Eighteen bodies found in Greek forest

Eighteen bodies have been found in a forested area of northern Greece hit by wildfires for the past four days, the Greek fire service says.

Initial reports suggest those who died may have been migrants. A coroner and investigation team are heading to the scene in the Dadia forest.

The Evros region of north-eastern Greece, not far from the Turkish border, has been ravaged by fires.

A hospital in the city of Alexandroupolis had to be evacuated.

Newborn babies and intensive care patients were among patients moved overnight to a ferry berthed at the port.

An earlier death, also believed to have been a migrant, had been reported in a village close to the coastal city and emergency services had sent mobile text messages to the surrounding areas asking people to leave.

The Dadia national park is a large wooded area to the north of Alexandroupolis, and fires are thought to have spread rapidly there since Monday.

This baby giraffe born with no spots is incredibly rare

A baby giraffe was born with no spots at Brights Zoo in Tennessee on 31 July. The spotless giraffe is incredibly rare. In a statement, the zoo said: "Giraffe experts believe she is the only solid-coloured reticulated giraffe living anywhere on the planet."
