Nest down: App and website not working leaving thermostats offline as weather brings record low temperatures

Nest thermostats have broken on one of the coldest days on record.

Users around the world are unable to adjust their app- and website-controlled heating systems because the online service is down.

The problems come as the US and elsewhere braces for one of the coldest days on record, with Chicago and other areas set to be colder than parts of Antarctica. Officials have warned that the temperatures could be life-threatening and that they might damage people's houses if their heating systems are unable to cope.

The Nest outage appears to be hitting across the world, according to Down Detector. Other parts of the globe are affected by the low temperatures, with the UK also forecast to be hit by snow and other extreme weather.

Nest's range of thermostats, smoke detectors and cameras are intended to make people's houses safer by adding the internet to commonly used technology.

The thermostats themselves can work without connecting to the internet, and still appear to be working. But previous problems have meant that heating systems have turned off automatically, and the thermostats do not appear to be keeping to their usual schedules.

Heard Kef will split into four(?) municipalities after the general elections, current mayor Alexandros Parisis will be a candidate for mayor of Argostoli. Not sure how definite the split is or whether it depends on who wins the election.

Didn't it used to be something like this till a few years ago? Was that the Kallikratis [??] reforms? It's a bit tricky to follow.

Yes, was four, think it was Argostoli (& Krani), Elios-Pronnoi, Erisos and Paliki - but could be wrong there.
Also heard there will be three, not four, municipalities when it's divided up  :dunno:

Alitalia will be flying Rome - Kef with one flight per week every Monday during the coming high season (only), in this case from 29 July - 26 August.

I thought that Pylaros was one of them because I knew the mayor, but i could be wrong (which is quite unusual  :) )

Pretty sure about Argostoli, Paliki and Elios-Pronnoi, it's the bit from about Agia Efimia Sami up to Fiskardo, could well be Pylaros

Greek driving test may be revised, particularly for young drivers. When it will happen... today's young drivers will probably be old drivers.

Sheep farmer felt so guilty on way to slaughterhouse he drove lambs to sanctuary and became vegetarian
'I’m not ignorant to how farming works but it always made me stressed. They knew their fate'

A sheep farmer who felt guilty about driving his lambs to slaughter had a change of heart and took them to a sanctuary instead, becoming a vegetarian in the process.

Sivalingam Vasanthakumar was in line to make up to £9,000 from selling the lambs’ meat before deciding to drive 200 miles out of his way to rehome them.

Peter Jackson to make new Beatles documentary using unseen footage from Let It Be sessions

Peter Jackson’s next project has been announced: a revised version of The Beatles documentary Let It Be.

The Lord of the Rings filmmaker will use 55 hours of in-studio footage initially filmed by director Michael Lindsay-Hogg for the original 1970 film.

The news comes on the 50th anniversary of The Beatles’s concert atop the Apple Records offices in London. While there’s no release date for Jackson’s film, sources tell Variety that the documentary could come out next year to mark the 50th anniversary of Let It Be.

Talk of seven new police officers for Kefalonia and Ithaka, not clear if that's new faces or actual new positions.
