Kef fire risk 16/06/23: Low

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £0.8812 GBP
1 €UR = $1.1144 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1348 €UR
$1 USD = 0.8973 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:
This is an overall forecast, due to the mountainous terrain the weather can be very localised.

TUI extends tourism season to Greece until mid-November due to high demand

Doesn't specify but I'd guess only to the busier islands, Crete, Corfu, Mykonos / Santorini.

Suspected smugglers in deadly boat sinking given until Monday to testify

Nine men arrested in connection with the sinking of a fishing boat southwest of the Peloponnese that killed at least 78 migrants were given until Monday (June 19) to testify before an investigative magistrate.

The men, who are said to be from Egypt, appeared before a prosecutor in Kalamata and were charged with forming a criminal organization with the purpose of illegal migrant trafficking, causing a shipwreck and endangering life. They then requested time to prepare their testimony.

Authorities believe the accused, aged 26, 21, 40, 36, 32, 26, 22, 29 and 20 years old, formed the ship’s crew and had distinct roles in transporting the rest.

Survivors have reportedly said that close to 100 children were on board and that the vessel was carrying between 400 and 600 people. The numbers of confirmed survivors and dead remain unchanged: 104 and 78 respectively.

Survey Rigged? Greece's Ranking in Average Penis Size by Country Raises Eyebrows

Greek men have been left crying "foul play" after worlddata.info - a scientific online publication that focuses on large global problems such as poverty, disease, hunger, climate change, war, existential risks and (especially applicable in this case) inequality - have released their annual global survey results ranking countries of the world by average penis size.

Isle of Wight: New dinosaur species discovered

The fossilised remains of a previously unknown type of dinosaur have been found on the Isle of Wight.

It is the first new species of armoured dinosaur to be found on the island since 1865 and belongs to the same family - the ankylosaurs.

Though fearsome in appearance with its blade-like armour, the giant reptile - which has been named Vectipelta barretti - only ate plants.

It was discovered in rocks dating back between 66 and 145 million years.

Boris Johnson signs '£1m' Daily Mail contract following damning partygate report

Boris Johnson has been unveiled as a new columnist for the Daily Mail, a day after a report found he repeatedly lied to MPs over the Downing Street partygate scandal.

The disgraced former prime minister will pen a weekly item for the tabloid newspaper, with media sources suggesting the contract could be worth £1m.

In an announcement video posted on Friday morning, Mr Johnson promised readers "completely unexpurgated" content. "I will write whatever I want," he said.

It has since transpired Mr Johnson didn't properly seek permission from the parliamentary watchdog to take up the role, which it has called a "clear breach" of the Ministerial Code.

Boris Johnson failed to inform watchdog over new Daily Mail column

Boris Johnson failed to write to the appointments watchdog before starting a new newspaper column with the Daily Mail, it has emerged.

The Advisory Committee on Business Appointments (Acoba) said it had not received an application from Mr Johnson to clear a new job writing for the newspaper.

A spokesman for the committee said it would write to the former prime minister requesting clarity on the job, amid reports he will start a new column on Saturday.

In a video message on Mail+, he said he will be writing “whatever I want”, but “as little as possible” about politics.

Former ministers who have left the Government in the past two years must apply to Acoba before taking up a new appointment or role.

“as little as possible” about politics... aye, stick to what you know, BoJo. So that rules out cars. Hmmmm, piss ups? Fathering lots of kids by different women? Or, good heavens, he could just invent stuff.

Greek coastguard denies claims refugee boat capsized after tow rope attached
UN calls for urgent action to prevent further tragedies as police believe up to 500 people remain missing

Officials denied reports that the heavily overcrowded boat could have flipped because a rope was attached to it by coastguards, and rejected criticism for not acting earlier after it emerged that a coastguard vessel escorted the boat – which set sail from Tobruk in Libya on 10 June – for hours.

After initially saying a coastguard vessel had kept its distance, a government spokesperson said on Friday that a rope was used. Ilias Siakantaris said the coastguard had “used a rope to steady themselves, to approach, to see if they wanted any help”, but insisted there was no attempt to tow the boat or tie the coastguard vessel to it.

“They refused it, they said, ‘No help, we go to Italy’ and continued on their way,” Siakarantis told Greek television. A coastguard spokesperson, Nikos Alexiou, said: “We chose to mind the vessel from a distance and that is why we reacted so fast.”
