Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8839 GBP   £1 GBP = 1.1313 €UR
1 €UR = $ 1.1194 USD   $1 USD = 0.8933 €UR
1 €UR = $ 1.7013 AUD   $1 AUD = 0.5877 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Sudden Chill in Greece Gives Olive Oil Producers Hope for Better Crop

After a milder winter in 2022 led to reduced olive oil production in Greece this year, the recent onset of colder weather – which the trees require during winter – has raised hopes that the 2024 yield will be greater.

The trees must be exposed to a certain period of relatively low temperatures in winter, known as chill hours, to break bud dormancy and produce olive fruits. Chill hours are counted only when the tree is dormant, meaning it is not actively flowering or growing.

Measuring the height of Mt Olympus, a century later

A group of climbers, research geologists and topography specialists have recalculated the altitude of Mt Olympus, Greece’s highest mountain, with modern methods, a century after the Swiss surveyor and alpinist Marcel Kurz in 1921.

His work was completed in 1923, calculating the altitude at 2,917.85 meters.

The team calculated the elevation of Mytikas, the highest peak, to be 2,917.727 meters, which was not far off Kurz’s estimate.

Greece Has EU’s Worst Record for Corruption, Media Freedom Stifling

Amid reports from European media freedom groups that Greece is making it difficult for media outlets and journalists to do their jobs, Transparency International said the country the worst record in the bloc for corruption.

“Greece is facing a rule of law crisis that is damaging the country’s gains in the CPI over the past decade,” the report said, although voters have shown little interest in such damning claims, easily re-electing Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in June, 2023.

That was despite revelations the National Intelligence Service (EYP) admitting bugging the phones of 15,745 people and reports that Predator spyware was in use, including against journalists, the government denying any role.

Penshaw Monument: Why an ancient Greek-style temple was built on a hill near Sunderland

Sitting atop a hill near Sunderland there stands an unlikely monument in the style of a Greek temple.

Penshaw Monument has been a popular spot for visitors for generations.

Now considered an icon of the region, it even features on the badge of Sunderland Football Club.

Kef police staffing to be increased by five officers. Seem to recall hearing that the local police union requested substantially more.

UK EuroMillions ticketholder scoops £61m but huge prize still unclaimed
A lucky UK lottery ticket holder has bagged £61 million in Tuesday’s EuroMillions draw - but is yet to come forward to claim the winnings.

The winner will receive a huge £61,708,231 from the £123m jackpot that has been split with another lucky ticketholder based in Spain.

The National Lottery is urging people to check their tickets to see if they have the winning numbers, which are: 05, 10, 19, 27, 30 – while the Lucky Stars are: 05, 06.

It comes as another winning EuroMillions ticket from earlier in the month remains unclaimed.

One ticket bought in Shropshire which scooped a £1 million prize on January 16 still has not been cashed in.
