Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8789 GBP   £1 GBP = 1.1377 €UR
1 €UR = $ 1.1321 USD   $1 USD = 0.8975 €UR
1 €UR = $ 1.7050 AUD   $1 AUD = 0.5865 €UR

Based on National Bank of Greece exchange rates.
Other banks likely to offer rates which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g. the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Princess of Wales: Kate image withdrawn by three news agencies amid 'manipulation' concerns

Three photo agencies have retracted a picture of the Princess of Wales over concerns it has been "manipulated".

The image, taken by Prince William and issued by Kensington Palace for Mother's Day, showed Catherine with their three children.

But, Associated Press was the first to pull the image as it "did not meet" the agency's photo standards noting an "inconsistency in the alignment of Princess Charlotte's left hand".

Kensington Palace are yet to comment.

Bit of bad taste at the Moraitika karnavali parade on Corfu yesterday: a caricature of Stefanos Kasselakis, the wealthy gay American former merchant banker who won a surprise election victory to lead Greek left-wing party SYRIZA... which has fragmented following his election.

Critically important metals are found
Greece’s potential as a major source of elements used in energy transition attracts investors

Greece very likely has significant sources of metals and semimetals among the so-called “critical minerals” essential for the transition to clean energy, among other uses, officials at the Ministry of Environment and Energy believe.

This belief was reinforced a couple of weeks ago by an “enthusiastic” presentation by UK-based Rockfire Resources PLC about the potential of its asset in Molaoi, southern Greece.

The company had already announced last year that it had discovered deposits of germanium and gallium, two of the abovementioned “critical minerals,” in addition to lead, silver and zinc.

Not a new idea but one that sounds good and hasn't been forgotten: the Vice-Regional Governor of Kefalonia and Ithaca, Sotiris Kouris, met with the head of the Port Authority of Kefalonia, Anthoula Kavakou, and requested that lorries arriving by ferry at Poros port be held back ten minutes to allow cars to disperse rather than tailing back behind the lorries on a road with few safe passing places.

Also requested: policing of the port area to prevent accommodation owners touting for business on the quayside (a time honoured tradition in Greek ports!)

Urgent need for workers from abroad

Money from the Recovery Fund may be lost, especially on Crete, because mainly small and medium-sized contractors have been left without staff and cannot carry out the projects they have undertaken.

Greece at rock bottom in social housing

When a law abolishing the Workers’ Housing Organization was passed in 2012 as part of a package of stringent austerity measures, Greece gave up the last tool of state intervention in the real estate market. So long as the rate of homeownership remained high, the recession continued to suppress property prices and interest rates stayed low, the housing problem could remain safely under the carpet.

That is certainly no longer the case. The cost of buying or renting a house is rising exponentially and far outpacing any growth in incomes, and demand for residential property is outpacing supply, putting a tremendous amount of pressure on the 30% of the population that doesn’t have a home to call its own. And now the country is facing the challenge of essentially rebuilding the institution of social housing from scratch to address the crisis and cover the huge gap with other European countries, which have succeeded in raising the share of social housing to as much as 20-30%.
