Greece passes first climate law, vows to cut dependence on fossil fuelsGreece passed on Thursday its first climate law, which sets out specific targets to fight climate change and wean itself off coal in power generation by 2028.The legislation sets interim targets for Greece to cut greenhouse emissions by at least 55% by 2030 and by 80% by 2040 before achieving zero-net emissions by 2050.It also engages the country to cut dependence on fossil fuels, including weaning off indigenous lignite or brown coal - once the main source of energy - in electricity production from 2028 onwards. This target might be brought forward to 2025, taking into account security of supplies.
A leaving do is ‘work’ but a birthday party isn’t: Met chief explains how Boris Johnson wriggled off the hookSir Stephen House tries to clarify reasoning behind partygate fines that were issued – and those that weren’t – for Downing St gatheringsLord Macdonald, who served as director of public prosecutions from 2003 to 2008, questioned why leaving events would be classified as reasonably necessary for work.He said: "It seems inappropriate to have a blanket definition of that sort. What about a leaving do where people get drunk, abuse the staff, vomit on the floor and start fights?"It would seem to be more sensible to assess each event on its merits. Most people would probably not accept that heavy drinking is necessary for work."Lord Paddick, a former deputy assistant commissioner at the Metropolitan Police, said: "Members of the public would not consider a leaving do to be necessary for work purposes in the context of the pandemic."Lord Paddick, now a Liberal Democrat peer who is bringing a legal action against the police over its handling of partygate, added: "For me, the evidence appears to be building up to suggest that the Met have done the minimum possible that they thought they could get away with."Stephen Kamlish, a leading criminal QC, said it was wrong for police to have classified Mr Johnson's attendance at a leaving do as a work commitment.
